Bhutan

My impressions

Happiness is relative, subjective and personal—what is quiet and serene for some is boredom and monotony to others. It is a wonder that Bhutan is often cited as the happiest on earth; I pondered this as my plane descended into Paro, the wheels kissing the tarmac. I began my journey, guided by Mr. Phurba, a reflection of Bhutan’s exquisite manners. I asked him if people here are indeed the happiest, and he politely corrected my understanding: 'It’s not that we are the happiest; it’s that our King chose to measure it using our core values.' As the distractions of the outside world and my inner turmoil dissolve, the calm and peace—seemingly woven into the fabric of its values—compelled me to fully immerse in the Bhutan experience. To cleanse the soul and rejuvenate a traveler’s spirit, a week suffices.
